Sydney Elaine

Sydney Elaine has always had a love for children. This love is what led her to pursue a career in education. On the path to becoming an educator, she experienced the fulfillment which only exists in the smiles of childhood learning. That sense of fulfillment, the lives of countless children, and the love within those lives, came together to shape the story of MyJoy’s Path to Adoption.

Sydney Elaine’s goal is to strive to foster a willingness within children to accept differences among one another. And with this story, she hopes to inspire an increase in adoptions by shedding light on the experiences of amazing adopted children and the families that they complete.

1.What inspired you to write a children's book?

I’ve always loved children, that’s why I took the route to become an educator. I think that the youth needs to see more representation of individuals that look like them. Growing up I didn’t see many characters that looked like me in children’s books. Ultimately, I wanted to provide what I didn’t have to the next generation. I wanted to help adoptees and brown children to see the beauty and value within themselves.

I became a children’s book author to give a voice to unheard stories of adoptees. In doing so, I made sure that the children would see a reflection of themselves through the illustrations.

Although, when I first began writing the story it was due to an experience I encountered with one of my students. Soon after, it grew much more personal. I think we all can agree that at some point we’ve sought for acceptance and wanting to feel wanted and loved.

2. If you could tell yourself one affirmation as a kid, what would it be?

No matter how hard life may get, always keep pushing. You are capable of achieving anything you put your mind to. Lastly, be intentional with your words because your words carry so much power.

3. What's next for you as an author?

Definitely going to write more MyJoy books! MyJoy will become a series of books bringing awareness to common issues.
